A personal and urgent examination of Fascism in the twentieth century and how its legacy shapes today’s world, written by one of America’s most admired public servants, the first woman to serve as U.S. secretary of state

A Fascist, observes Madeleine Albright, “is someone who claims to speak for a whole nation or group, is utterly unconcerned with the rights of others, and is willing to use violence and whatever other means are necessary to achieve the goals he or she might have.”

The twentieth century was defined by the clash between democracy and Fascism, a struggle that created uncertainty about the survival of human freedom and left millions dead. Given the horrors of that experience, one might expect the world to reject the spiritual successors to Hitler and Mussolini should they arise in our era. In Fascism: A Warning, Madeleine Albright draws on her experiences as a child in war-torn Europe and her distinguished career as a diplomat to question that assumption.

Fascism, as she shows, not only endured through the twentieth century but now presents a more virulent threat to peace and justice than at any time since the end of World War II.  The momentum toward democracy that swept the world when the Berlin Wall fell has gone into reverse.  The United States, which historically championed the free world, is led by a president who exacerbates division and heaps scorn on democratic institutions.  In many countries, economic, technological, and cultural factors are weakening the political center and empowering the extremes of right and left.  Contemporary leaders such as Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un are employing many of the tactics used by Fascists in the 1920s and 30s.

Fascism: A Warning is a book for our times that is relevant to all times.  Written  by someone who has not only studied history but helped to shape it, this call to arms teaches us the lessons we must understand and the questions we must answer if we are to save ourselves from repeating the tragic errors of the past.

  • Top notch

    By Nancy McDowell
Very thorough, insightful, wise book that everyone should read, starting in high school.
  • Opened my eyes

    By C☔
This book was thought provoking. It was difficult to read but such an important lesson to learn. It opened my eyes to seeing the parallels with the current president of the USA and fascism throughout the history of the world. All American citizens would benefit from reading the book. The next step is for all US citizens to talk share and find common grounds before such horror takes over the USA.
  • Naivety of Madeleine

    By San Jose Geek
This is a great book which I love. My global views are totally in agreement to Madeleine’s. However there are two areas of naivety that she misses; 1) Madeleine talks about Americans living standards not rising but misses the point of the Trump phenomenon which is that real incomes in America have been on a decline since about the 1975 time frame. So it’s not about incomes rising but a decline over almost half a century. 2) Madeleine talks about the extremes of the left and right and misses the point that the Democrats became an elitist right wing party controlled by multi millionaires such as Hilary. Look at all the internal dirty tricks of Hilary’s team within the DNC. This is why the Bernie phenomenon arose to counter the Democrats mega rich ( Pelosi as an example of multi millionaire elitists within the Democrats).
  • History in the making

    By 2xdl
I love history for the simple reason that the past reveals the future and history will repeat itself. Yet so few wish to accept and prevent this from occurring due to their own insecurities. It is my hope and prayer that people will look within at what is going on in our country and the world politically and do what is right. However, history has taught us we will not, and millions or hundreds of millions of people will die at the hands of a few greedy, power hungry, manipulative individuals. I believe Madeleine Albright is right on with her warning signs of Facisism and the current political environment world wide. Wonderfully written, an easy read for a non historian like myself yet poignant.
  • Confused

    By Shelley1221
Since I am sure Albright is not stupid or ignorant I can only surmise she is intentionally trying to mislead her readers. This is a another piece of anti trump anti free speech propaganda. We are waking up to this tactic.... I hope.
  • She is a bit mixed up

    By PraiseKekffff
In this book the author is basically explaining the liberal left. I think she is trying to explain facism but she is a bit too brainwashed to do so.
  • *Sigh* 🙄

    By Hopeful contestant.
This author is so left-biased she sees Donald J Trump is fascist like ways, and some of that understandably, but is blind to how fascist people like Bernie Sanders are. She values democracy above all else, but fails to recognize how easily, when left to the 51% can oppress the 49%. She doesn’t understand the place of the constitution, which is there to protect the people from fascism. She fails to see the role of small government in the place of preventing fascism, when in reality, that is the most decisive factor. She doesn’t even mention how necessary gun rights are do the defense of democracy and freedom.
  • Fascism?

    By DrMcDougall
A book on fascism by the woman who told women that they would go to hell if they didn't vote for Hillary - sounds fascist to me... I stopped reading after the first couple chapters...
  • Warning from a wisdom

    By Omurcinar
A sound, carefully written, cautious warning that every citizen of the World should read and think about it. Many take democracy granted and never think the darkness of fascism could infiltrate into the depths of civil society. In her book, Secretary Albright cautions us that this naive conformism might be dangerous for the future of democracy, even in the US. On the other side, although Secretary Albright briefly mentions the historical guilt and responsibilities of American society and politics and their historical connection with fascism, there is a wide room to discuss historical details of the responsibility of colonialism and the US on both promoting democracy and fascism around the world and in the US. I think that would help us to understand better the dynamics behind the election of Donald Trump and its impact to the future of democracy.
  • Fascism - A Warning

    By Lbdina
As someone who has suffered under Fascism herself, and as a longtime, high level diplomat and Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright is in a position to speak authoritatively on the subject of Fascism. It is well written, compelling, and right on target. The world is at a potentially dangerous crossroads and the direction looks darker than it has in recent memory. This book is a warning, as the title clearly states. We must be vigilant and work together to preserve the democracy we hold so dear. Fascism - A Warning is an important book and well worth reading.
